| I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we can post some or our favourite lyrics, whether they strike a chord in you, move you, make you laugh, or you just like them for no apparent reason at all, which happens.
Wasn't sure if it would fit best in "other bands", or here. Anyway.
I was listening to Beck again today.
Get up from your bed of rest It's been a long time since you've lived And the static in your mind Leaves you hollow and unkind With a shock electric wave Turns you on
Beck - Static
Ooh. Just thought of one more I love(and also listened to today).
Kiss me like we die tonight
Elbow - One Day Like This
Quite swoon-worthy if ya ask me.

Quite swoon-worthy if ya ask me. Couldn't agree more Topaz! There's a lot of lyrics I love...one I just heard today is from Teardrop (by Massive Attack, and Elbow have covered it as well). The opening line is, "Love, love is a verb/Love is a doing word". Something people tend to forget sometimes!

| And if the bottle's no solution Why does it feel so warm And if that girl is no solution Why did she feel so warm And if to feel is no solution Why do I feel Why do I feel so tired Why do I feel so broken Why do I feel so outside Why do I seem so blind I'm so sick of feeling It's ruined my life
Marillion - When I met God
and these -
When the darkness takes me over Face down, emptier than zero Invisible you come to me ..quietly Stay beside me Whisper to me "Here I am" And the loneliness fades Some people think I'm somethin' Well you gave me that, I know But I always feel like nothing When I'm in the dark alone
You provide the soul, the spark that drives me on Makes me something more than flesh and bone
At times like these Any fool can see Any fool can see Your love inside me

| There are millions that are great.
I do recall some Verve.
Life's an Ocean, Too much commotion, too much emotion, Dragging me down. Living for today, don't have time to pray..
and of course all of Elbow.
I can work til I break, but i love the bones of you and that i will never escape.

Nice call lee...XTC never pulls a punch lyrically. The whole of Dear God is pretty exceptional as well, I think.

| I just found out that I like the new Death Cab For Cutie album, much to my surprise. The lyrics are pretty good across the board, but here's one that stuck with me (from the track You Can Do Better Than Me):
I’m starting to feel We stay together out of fear of dying alone I’ve been slipping through the years My old clothes don’t fit like they once did So they hang like ghosts of the people I’ve been And it’s like my heart can't be tamed I fall in love every day And I feel like a fool But I have to face the truth that no one could ever look at me like you do Like I’m something worth holding on to There’s times I think of leaving But it’s something I’ll never do Cause you can do better than me, But I can’t do better than you. You can do better than me, But I can’t do better than you.

| It just occurred to me that "August & September" (which was always one of my favourite songs before I heard the Elbow cover) always reminds me of splitting up with my first girlfriend when I was 19.
Suddenly last summer I started going out of my head In a tiny hotel room Lying naked on a bed I knew what you were doing, and I knew what you'd done Your life with me was ending, your new life had begun But I was cursing your name, and I was cursing that room And I was praying for the strength to stop loving you
I started writing you the letter Which turned into the book I was gonna reach across the ocean and force you to look But what kind of man was I? Who would sacrify you happiness to satisfy his pride What kind of man was I? Who would delay your destiny to appease his tiny mind
Then you came back to me and I went down on one knee With a glint in my eyes and a rose between my teeth And I pushed out my tongue for you to see That I'd been dying of a thirst for your company Then you quenched my loneliness with your tears And our clothes fell away as we rolled back the years But we could't deny it because we could not admit it
If our love was too strong to die Or we were just too weak to kill it
Was our love too strong to die? Or were we just too weak to kill it?
Every moment in that room I closed my eyes in prayer Every moment I awoke I clenched my teeth in prayer What kind of man was I? Who would sacrify your happiness to satisfy his pride What kind of man was I? Who would delay your destiny to appease his tiny mind Who could delay your destiny to appease his aching swollen pride Who could delay your destiny to appease his screaming little mind You're mine

| I'm a million different people from one day to the next - The Verve, Bittersweet Symphony
Cry like a child, though these years make me older With children my time is so wastefully spent A burden to keep, though their inner communion Accept like a curse an unlucky deal - Joy Division, The Eternal
People like you find it easy, Naked to see, Walking on air. Hunting by the rivers, Through the streets, Every corner abandoned too soon, Set down with due care. Don't walk away in silence, Don't walk away. - Joy Division, Atmosphere
I am the resurrection and I am the life, I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like. - The Stones Roses, I Am The Resurrection
Token Elbow one coming up:
Press your lips To my eyes Taste my tears On your tongue, Pull the blinds Play our song Nothings changed Nothing could be wrong. - Elbow, Newborn

| "Do You Realize?" - The Flaming Lips
Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face Do You Realize - we're floating in space - Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
"All You Good, Good People" - Embrace
I feel like I'm at something, you always say you need more time. Well I'll stay right here and, I'll wait for good until I find a love worth mine.
Someday you've got it coming, it hurts me when I read the signs. So loud and clear that, I'll make you glad if I'm leaving first and crying.
All you good good people listen to me, Are you just about done with the way that you feel? When nothing rings home enough to dig your heels in, You don't have to leave me to see what I mean. All you good good people listen to me.
All I want to do is find, My name upon the line. Before I have to lose this, I want time.
All you good good people listen to me, Are you just about done with the way that you feel? When nothing rings home enough to dig your heels in You don't have to leave me to see what I mean. Lose all your fears they are keeping you down, You won't have to fake it while I'm around. All you good good people listen to me.
"Letting The Cables Sleep" - Bush
Whatever you say it's alright Whatever you do it's all good Whatever you say it's alright Silence is not the way We need to talk about it If heaven is on the way If heaven is on the way
You in the sea On a decline Breaking the waves Watching the lights go down Letting the cables sleep
Whatever you say it's alright Whatever you do it's all good Whatever you say it's alright Silence is not the way We need to talk about it If heaven is on the way We'll wrap the world around it If heaven is on the way If heaven is on the way
I'm a stranger in this town I'm a stranger in this town
If heaven is on the way If heaven is on the way I'm a stranger in this town I'm a stranger in this town
"Great Expectations" - Ebow
And if it rains all day Call on you I'll call on you Like I used to Slide down beside and wrap you in stories Tailored entirely for you I'll remind you We exchanged a vow I love you I always will
A call girl with yesterday eyes Was our witness and priest Stockport supporters club kindly supplied us a choir Your veil was your smile As we move down the aisle Of the last bus home And this is where I go Just when it rains
Blinking and stoned Rain in your hair You only smoke 'cause it's something to share Singing bring on the night To have and to hold The sodium light turning silver to gold
Spitfire thin and strung like a violin I was Yours was the face with a grace From a different age You were the sun in my sunday morning You were the sun in my sunday morning Telling me never to go So I'll live on the smile And move down the isle Of the last bus home And if you're running late This is where I'll go

| How i wish you could see the potential, The potential of you and me, Its like a book elegently bound, In a language that you can't read.
I will possess your heart - DCFC
So twist and whisper the wrong name I don’t care and nor do my ears. Twist yourself around me I need company, I need human heat. I need human heat.
Lets pretend I’m attractive and then You won’t mind, we can twist for a while. It’s the night, I can be who you like. And I’ll quietly leave before it gets light.
Twist - Frighten Rabbit
In fact i could have quoted any line of any song on that album!!!

Come on, come together Come on, come together
Well, little Johnny had an ache That hung around the poor boy's neck Every time that Johnny ate The little fucker fed the ache
Come on, come together Come on, come together
So little J's a fucked-up boy Dulled the pain that killed the joy So little J's a fucking mess That when he's offered just says yes
Little J is sad and fucked First he jumped and then he looked The tracks of time, these tracks of mine Little J is occupied
