| (Mimes a 'street' handshake).....Speech Debelle, well........heard a song earlier and it was just 'alright'. Still, gotta be better than bloody Florence and Her Rusty Machine, the voice of cats being strangled. | |

Aye. Can't be doing with Florence either. She can't sing; she just shouts out of tune. I'm not a follower of grime, but I like it when the Mercury judges occasionally go all wilful and wrongfoot the pundits by giving the prize to someone who isn't just a flavour-of-the-month darling of the music press. Florence's fixed "smile" was hilariously unconvincing.

Grant, your fingers-crossed stance regarding the Friendly Fires seems to suggest that you are unaware that the winner was announced on Tuesday. Did you miss it?

It's a really good album. Not as good as The Invisible though!

| Have to be honest and say i haven't heard any of the tracks at all, although will endeavour to have a listen. Gets back to the diversity of the Mercury awards, and perhaps why i was so shocked that our Boys won last year. (much deserved of course !) | |

| I suppose it is in the spirit of Mercury Prizes to give some publicity + money to lesser known bands but this years is a real disappointment.
What do the judges look for?
Does that type of music have a wide audience now or in the future.

Hip-hop? I can only imagine you've not listened to the radio in the past 20 years?

Hip-hop? I can only imagine you've not listened to the radio in the past 20 years? Its listening to the radio that made me say that comment. + I took in the comments made by some on the night of the awards. Hip-hop has changed over the past 10 years. Her style i feel is dated. [b] It has an audience - I just questioned how wide an audience.

| As far as I am aware, the decision on who wins the prize has nothing to do with how wide the audience is for their music. | |

But then again, your pick for the award was Kasabian. The jazz and soul elements of her album may sound old-fashioned (or 'dated'), but fused with her wonderful rap style makes for a beautiful, fresh sounding album.
