Everything Everything release their first album the end of this month. Saw them support Keane last month. They're great, a bit quirky but loving their music, refreshing different. Guy played them on Finest hour a while back, said they were one to watch.
ooh I'll look out for that, I like the singles I've heard so far...

I saw them in June and I wasn't impressed with them. The young lad on base looked out of his depth and the mix was wrong, so I couldn't hear the singer. Helio Sequence were the surprise, for me.

I liked the Helio Sequence album when I got it from a friend a while back, Lesley. Decent tunes, I thought!
Very much enjoying the new Thermals album...they're an excellent, intelligent power pop/punk trio from Portland who have made some great abums over the past several years. The new one is out in the States next week, and a free full-album stream is available on NPR's website until the release. I make the following suggestion with some trepidation ... however, I figure the average Elbow fan has a pretty good idea what makes for a decent album. One more caveat: for me this band burned brightest in their early incarnation. The success of a No 1 hit single heralded their creative decline. Their influences were transparent, namely art rock from the likes of Roxy Music and Bowie to the more experimental (and electronic) leanings found in krautrock.
Yes folks, I'm talking about Simple Minds. They are (perhaps deservedly) lambasted by the music press for their bombast and posturing. However, in the early 1980s they produced an album of breathtaking beauty and depth. It's called New Gold Dream 81,82,83,84. It is, and perhaps always will be, my favouite album. Why? Strong tunes, no fat, great lyrics. And proof about the sum of the parts being greater ...
To see Jim Kerr doing his Bono impressions gives me the creeps. There was a time when they did their own thing, and did it very well. Before the lights of Tinseltown turned their heads and they became a crap U2.

Aside from Elbow, my musical heroes include:
Queen David Bowie George Harrison John Lennon Nick Cave Joni Mitchell Eva Cassidy Kate Bush ELO The Carpenters Neil Young T-Rex Sade Alanis Morissette Sinead O' Connor Annie Lennox
And who can forget.... The Beautiful South?
I could write an exhaustive list of musicians I *like* or ones I am loving at the moment, but no; these I adore and were the guys and gals I grew up listening to. Check them all out if you haven't already.

On the way to the O2 on Tuesday, I listened to "O.Children" - burned for me by a mate at work. Check out The Ruins by them.......it's like Ian Curtis rose again.

Oh Em Eff Gee!
The new TV On The Radio album....Nine Types of Light.....is awesome. Like, double awesome. I usually don't LOVE them, but this album I definitely LOVE.
They've got a video for every track on the album, and they've strung the whole lot together as a movie, which is now available to view on YouTube and makes for a really interesting way to experience the album. If you've got an hour to check it out, you can do that here:
