New Elbow Fansite/Social Network Plug

MT suggested this a while back when I started to gather a collection of video clips of the band's appearances, so finally it's up and running; a dedicated mini social network site called elbowfans.ning.com.

Just like MySpace, Facebook etc, there's shared photos & vids plus member pages, links, event news, chat space and a mini-forum plus capacity to set up your own groups, blog and other such goodies. There's also live RSS updates for news from the official band site & MoBlog.

It's early days so if you have time to check it out I'd value your feedback and ideas. All welcome to join in - it won't be much fun without you!

Mrswoman made a lovely wallpaper to share in celebration, in the early hours of Mark's birthday yesterday, over on her site.
I might be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here... but new (and old) stuff is still being added at a sedate pace, every so often. So as to not miss, suscribe to the Feed which is updating any activity. I didn't do, to start with but its easier. Then if you don't have time to log in and look about you can still keep up to date with what Elbow goodies are going there and maybe even be inspired to contribute yourself

Its not running as a hot discussion forum like here, but more as Elbowies very own exclusive Elbow facebook/youtube, with extras, like helpful links for planning the next Elbow gig etc.

We've had good things contributed so far in the first month, as I can remember, from Nellie, ChrissieinFl, Bright Grey, TL , ukkonen...

Thanks everyone for getting involved - including Ticky, Topaz, MT & Chrissy Boy too - and for spreading the word as well!

For curious folks, it's been a conscious decision not to promote or duplicate with another discussion forum, so EF refers back to here (& PB). ElbowFans is intended more as a sister site, a place to enjoy and share other 'fan stuff' like videos, photos, track rarities and so on, all in one place. Like Facebook and the other social networks, you can comment on content and 'my pages', blogs and groups if you like to personalise or have a bit of craic

One ask of anyone who's for a 'bow challenge: ElbowFans has a developing Wiki-style members archive - biograohy, discog, gigs, press features, media appearances etc - so if you have time to check, edit or add, your work will be very much appreciated!

If anyone would like the Mark wallpaper LWD mentioned, it's still up here. There'll be more e-goodies posted over time.

Just joined and had a look around, brilliant collection of photos and videos. Don't know why I didn't find the time to join before! I saw in the news feed that Chat has just been enabled too, awesome. Now we can all chat in real time. I can see myself spending way too much time on there and not getting anything else done.

Great work on the site, MrsWoman! Will put up some of my own photos tomorrow!

*Switching hats from ERO to ElbowFans*

Anyone tuned into Web2.0 news might already know Ning's CEO has decided to end free services, which unfortunately includes the ElbowFans Ning.

I've just posted on the forum there and asked members to comment as to what they want, but as many folk are also here, I'll sum up my options:

1. Stay with Ning on their cheapo service, but lose many features inclusing music and uploaded (but not embedded) video. Also we're cappped at 150 members which means losing ten non-active folk as it stands. Not ideal by any means.

2. Stay with Ning and the middle price option and charge a small annual subscription ($1 or £1 a year?).

3. Move to some other similar/suitable free site while we can (with the possibility of subs there in the future).

4. Go to our own domain and hosting with no restrictions, but would be scratch built and would likely be a gradual process, plus a PayPal donation ad on the homepage.


I've got 10 weeks to make a decision, but want to get people's views on what they'd prefer. If you also happen to have any suggestions for free sites or any fave coding sites to recommend, I'd be dead grateful.

I would be keen not to lose any content we already have on the Ning site as you, LWD and others have spent so long putting everything up.
I personally don't have a problem paying a subscription for it, if it allows us to hold on to everything that's already there, however I can see how we may lose casual visitors if that was the case.
Anyway, I will go along with whatever is decided...

I think Mrs Woman may be a little shy about asking for a donation (but I'm not!). I only found out about it when I got an email from Luckywithdisease. If you go onto the Ning site, you'll get a better explanation. If we all pull together, I'm sure Mrs W will be able to sort something out!!
