| Funny you should start this thread now - I was just thinking about it the other day when we got out an old Neil Diamond CD (yes, really ) over the weekend and Morningside brought a real tear to my eye. I rarely actually cry at songs but these are some that can and do make me: Elbow - Some Riot, Friend of Ours Laurie Anderson - Slip Away Tim Buckley's Dream Letter, but my favourite version is by Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance Sandy Denny - Stranger to Himself Justin Sullivan - Apocalypse Dream Melanie Safka - Leftover Wine And the ultimate - always guaranteed to bring a lump to my throat - Swallows by Sergeant Buzfuz "I call as though you hear me, as though you're just asleep...". Sorry if some are a bit obscure, but there's no logic to this one. :-) | |

| There's lots.
The first that comes to mind is Fugitive Motel. God I love that song.
Van Morrison's 'Have I Told You Lately' which segues in to 'Coney Island' has to be some of the most gorgeous sentiments around.
Song To The Siren, the version by This Mortal Coil with vocals by Elizabeth Fraser (she of Cocteau Twins fame) is just pure emotion.
Fantastic Place by Marillion on the Marbles album gets me every time too.
There's planty of others.

| Thanks for introducing me to The Song is Over TL - I've just listened (I only ever knew Radar Love by Golden Earring...) and it's a lovely song.
I've just remembered The Queen & the Soldier by Suzanne Vega, that one always gets me.

| Family Life by The Blue Nile...Paul Buchanan's voice is one of my favorites and it rivals Guy's with its beautiful, emotional delivery.
Beautiful Boy by John Lennon...hearing him sing about watching his son grow up, and then knowing he didn't live to do that, just chokes me up every time.
Dead of Winter - Eels...actually, this whole album (Electro-Shock Blues) kills me, as it chronicles the death of E's mother from cancer and his sister's suicide. His life pretty much sucked. Still a beautiful piece of work, though.

| The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve No Surprises - Radiohead (Cried my eyes out the first time I saw the video. I put it down to hormones...) These Are The Days of Our Lives - Queen ( I had an inkling that Freddie Mercury was not well so the the first time I heard this was very moving. His voice had never sounded better. Great loss). Love's Been Good To Me - Frank Sinatra Prettiest Eyes - The Beautiful South Lesley | |

| Friend of Ours - Elbow The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve I'm Going to Stop Pretending I Didn't Break Your Heart - Eels These two aren't really conventional but hey they mean quite a lot to me, due to the use in two films I watched constantly as a kid. One Last Wish - James Horner (Caspar) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbS0jdlxrzc&feature=relatedLe Carnaval des Animaux' (The Carnival of the Animals) - Camille Saint-Saëns (inspired part of the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack, still in my top 5 films ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdTynzJZv5w | |

Good choice. E's lyrics are almost (but not quite) as good as Guy's. If you like Carnival of the Animlas, try Saint-Saens Symphony No3 (Organ). There are passages in there that are some of the most atmospheric and beautiful pieces of music ever written.

| When it comes to classical music, my fave tearjerker are Dvorak - Symphony from the New World, Part 2 Largo Beethoven - Piano Concert no. 5, Part 2 Love theme of Romeo and Juliet (the Zefirelli-Film) The Piano Phil Coulter - Coultergeist (the funniest classical tearjerker, makes me smile and sob at the same time) and the funniest Tearjerker in Rockmusic is the very strange coverversion from The White Stripes of Jolene original by Dolly Parton. On one side I want to laugh about it, because a man sings it so emotional without being gay but on the other hand I want to sob, because he sings it so overemotional, that he really sounds like that Jolene is breaking his/her heart.. | |

Yes yes yes! The only song that has ever made me actually cry is To Build a Home by the Cinematic Orchestra. I blame Garvey for playing it frequently on Finest Hour. Bastard.

| Ah yes, there are so many Jeff Buckley tearjerkers. He had one of the sweetest voices ever.
Just about anything on Beck's Sea Change tugs at my heartstrings. Musicians going through breakups and/or tough times write some pretty amazing songs.
