It's compulsory (or at least it was) to learn at least one foreign language in UK schools - when I was at school 20 years ago we learnt French for four years and then had a choice of either French or German for at least another three, but I think you can also learn Spanish and Mandarin Chinese these days.

Similar to when I was at school, 30 years ago, French for two years then either German or Spanish.

I much preferred the German to the French, probably because we had a mad young bloke teach us who insisted we call him Herr Braun, even though we knew for a fact the closest he'd been to Germany was South Shields!

I did Spanish, even went on a Spanish exchange trip to Malaga. Nice language, very phonetic.

it's the same in sweden, four years of German, french or spanish. English is compulsory since we are 9 or 10 in schools. German Frech or spanish is compulsory from you are 13-14 i think.
I did spanish for 4 years, and i can't speak it. can't belive they gave me a grade for it! i failed epicly hahah

Yes, apart from Dutch I also did English, French and German.
Which was hard going because I had to read 20 books for each of them. Thankfully I had 2 years to do it.

After speaking English for so long, do you still have to think about what you are writing or are you fluent enough to just switch into English mode?

Speaking of me I speak English probably fluent enough to switch into English (well you all thought I am a native speaker).
But I'll never be perfect in it. Doesn't matter to me. Most important is the fact that you can communicate with each other.

Well, I find I'm struggling to retain my Dutch.
When I'm on the phone to my Mum she has to keep telling me I've switched over to English without even noticing

Nicely off topic now...but I don't care about things like that anymore!
