Olympic theme tune

I saw the animated promo on YouTube yesterday, as I've been searching for it here and there lately. The song, as much of it as they've put in the ad anyway, is brilliant. Every bit as epic and awesome as I was expecting! Yesterday evening I was listening to BBC Radio 1's Introducing show with Ally McCrae and Jen Long (it's on at 7 o'clock in the eastern US), and they played an Olympic promo with a segment of "First Steps" that was new.

This part sounded like it was played on a harpsichord.

The melody was there, and it sounded ethereal.

It's going to be an interesting piece of music.

Just discovered "First Steps" on Vimeo. It's the longer version, without the BBC branding.

Just in case anyone hasn't spotted it yet, I've just come across the BBC website's short video on the making of First Steps. There's plenty of Guy, with a short contribution from Craig, and shots of the rest of the lads in studio. It's pretty good - typically Guy. He explains his thought processes, and inspirations, for the song. View it here:

I was on Facebook waiting for the delayed train into London (good start...) and read that Radio 2 debuted it this morning on Chris Evans show.

Brilliant 'making of'. I'm guessing this is the same one the band tweeted about, as it's 10 minutes long. I'm hoping First Steps will win over some more of my mates into Elbow fandom or at least give them a healthy respect for the band!

Great read Sparky, Guy's so good at shedding light onto something you haven't heard, yer know - the thought process behind it - can't wait to watch the 10 min clip of 'First Steps' when I get home later.

Here's the workaround I used this morning. I'll try to explain.

First, make sure you have the Amazon Downloader installed.

Next, create a UK address for your 1-Click settings. You don't need to have your credit card registered there. You just need the address. Find one randomly if you need to. Tell Amazon UK that that UK address is your default 1-Click address.

Then, go to Dave Proxy. http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/

Paste the Amazon address above into Dave Proxy.

The page will load. Click "Buy with 1-Click."

You may get some insecure warnings. You may also need to enter your e-mail address and password (I don't think Dave Proxy picks up the cookies on your machine.) Basically, give Amazon the information it's asking for.

Amazon will tell you that you need to install the Amazon Downloader. Read the text, because there's someplace where there's a small text link that says to use the Downloader because it's already installed. (It should be right underneath the big box that says you need to install the downloader.)

When you click that, the Amazon Downloader will either open and start downloading your file. Or, you'll get a download link to the AMZ file. If you get the download link, tell your browser to open it, not save it.

Once the download starts, you can close the Dave Proxy window in your browser. And once the download finishes, you're done.

Just listening to first steps on you tube , just brilliant ! But why are we not hearing it much on the Olympics coverage ? thought they were going to play snippets throughout and for the medal ceremonies.

I have been playing the full-length version of the song for the last 48 hours repeatedly....I just can't get enough of it. It's amazingly Elbow and amazingly unlike Elbow all at once - quite fascinating. I have to say that the boys hinting that they would love to write a film score really isn't such a mad suggestion - it would be quite the opposite; aural heaven, I think.

The first time I heard the full length version of First Steps, I thought it had echoes of Craig Armstrong....the cinematic strings, the romantic melody in the slower, sadder parts.... it is like they collaborated with him. Uncanny.

Masterpiece that makes me utterly proud - as if I wasn't already - to be an Elbow fan.

I don't have a TV so not watching any footage live, yet after seeing 10 mins of TV coverage at a relative's house this morning there was a (very) cut down version of the animation + First Steps while they switched sports. It's being used somewhere I guess!

I heard it quite a bit when i was back in the uk last week. My mum said that normally the theme tune for something like the Olympic games would be driving her mad by this stage but she quite likes this one.

Take it from me, that is actually high praise.

i found it used everywhere... the beeb has went totally cross platform on it... all the radio stations (well 2,4,5; & 6) have used it as backing to olympic pieces, plus all the trailers for the tv... then the tv, its used on virtually every cut away i've seen...

good craic for the boys...
