Alex Chilton, singer and guitarist with Big Star, has died aged 59.
Very influential band and a very talented man. You can hear traces of Big Star in REM (as acknowledged by Peter Buck), a host of jangly guitar rock bands and, of course, Teenage Fanclub.
RIP Alex.

Lordy, am I ever tired of posting to R.I.P. threads lately...they're dropping like flies! And man, Alex Chilton...he was awesome. You're right about the huge influence Big Star had on so many alternative and modern rock acts, Mr_K. I find that not too many of their songs are played on radio nowadays, which is a shame because they were as good as so many other artists from that era, if not better. R.I.P., indeed.

Alex Chilton inspired two of my favourite bands, REM and Teenage Fanclub
There's a well written obituary in The Times today
