Utter bollocks again. "Hello" can be traced back to the word "holla" from Middle French hola (equivalent to ho ahoy + la there).

Gotta agree that it wasn't linked to the telephone, but given the first use was by Mark Twain, I'm afraid the bloody Yanks did get there first anyway.
