| - NME.com wrote:
- Elbow have won the Outstanding Contribution To British Music prize at the Shockwaves NME Awards in London tonight (February 25).
The band – who opened the ceremony with a performance of their 2008 single 'Grounds For Divorce' – made it an awards hat-trick having previously won The Nationwide Mercury Prize and Best British Group at the BRITs in the last 12 months.
Elbow were selected for their honour this evening by NME's editors.
Explaining the choice, NME Editor Conor McNicholas told the room: "Tonight the NME is giving out a special Outstanding Contribution To British Music award to a special band. Formed in Bury in 1990 as Mr Soft, they changed their name in 1997 but have kept the same line-up since day one. They have weathered their fair share of hardship on the way to success – dropped by one label before their debut album was even released, and seeing another label disappear from underneath them. It was the death of a close friend that inspired their current album – one that was self-produced and done without a label but has now gone on to be their most successful.
"Through all these tribulations the band have never compromised their vision or their music, continuing to make their epic, touching, heart-rending and empowering tunes for those who believed. Their success now is a success for every independently-minded musician and music fan. NME believed from day one. In fact they the only band in NME's history to have gained 9/10 for every album they have released – all four of them.
"After nearly 20 years this band have really found a place in the heart of the whole nation. One of the best kept secrets in British music is a secret no more."

| Apparently Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud "lost" the award Elbow won: - Quote :
- Sarah Harding can always be depended on for a wild night out, but it seems she's not quite so reliable when it comes to precious possessions.
The Girls Aloud singer was in fine form last night as she hit the NME awards with bandmate Nicola Roberts, but unfortunately she was concentrating too hard on partying and not enough on looking after an award given to Elbow.
The band won the prestigious outstanding contribution to British music trophy earlier in the evening at Brixton Academy.
They couldn’t make the afterparty at the the nearby Dex club, so entrusted Sarah to look after their gong, which came complete with their name engraved on it.
But its current whereabouts is unknown after she left it in the ladies bathroom. I had to look into this further and the 3am girls over at the Mirror wrote this: "As we piled into a limo with Sarah, Elbow's award was nowhere to be seen. Luckily it was found safe and well, unlike us the next morning..." Do you think anyone would actually think this is true?

| Just watched the opening minutes of this. Great performance of Grounds as per. Guy beating shit out of a pair of toms instead of the aluminium ingot. Mark playing a very nice looking, very cool National guitar. I'd fucking love one of those. | |

| Did think it was strange that they didn't appear to be nominated for any awards and yet they were opening the awards show. Should have guessed they were getting something very special. | |

| Though I am sceptical about classic meets rockband I liked that performance a lot more than the Abbey Road one. The brass - oh wonder- even reminded me a tiny bit on good old "Bitten by the tailfly" | |
