| Just dropping by to post a link for anyone who is interested; USA Today happened to have an article regarding declining sound quality in the music industry - not as technically detailed as some of the other posts linked to on this thread, but a good basic read for those of us with a bit less expertise oin this subject. It has a helpful little sidebar explaining the different digital formats as well, since many people (myself included) may not be too familiar with all of that info. You can find it here: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2008-06-02-better-sound-formats_N.htm | |

| THE REASON WHY WE ARE HERE IS BECAUSE WE ALL LOVE ELBOW. NOW...
IF YOU WANT LOUD YOU TRUNDLE OFF TO YOUR LOCAL RECORD SHOP TO PURCHASE A YOUNG KNIVES OR SEX PISTOLS CD, YOU GO HOME, BURST YOUR EAR DRUMS AND ENJOY. FAIR-DOOS...
BUT, THE THING IS. ELBOW MUSIC WOULDNT BE RIGHT AT FULL VOLUME. THE THRILL OBTAINED FROM ENERGY-MUSIC IS A UNIQUE ONE - MUCH LIKE A HIGH... BUT... THE THRILL OF ELBOW IS - THAT THING WHERE A SHIVER IS SENT DOWN YOUR SPINE, WHEN THE HAIRS ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK STAND UP. WHEN YOU FEEL AMAZING. YOU HEAR THIS ASTONISHING MUSIC AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL GREAT. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU COULD CONQUER THE WORLD.
LISTEN TO GRACE UNDER PRESSURE AND GO OUT INTO THE OUTSIDE WORLD AND SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS "WE STILL BELIEVE IN LOVE, SO FUCK YOU!!!!!"
AGREE????
oh and cheers Craig. x. | |

| Leo.
Though I appreciate your passion, and agree with your sentiment, I think I speak for most people on here when I say that posting in all caps is frowned upon.
It gives the impression that you are shouting.
Please refrain from this in future.

| It's a bit hard to explain in simple English, especially if you aren't involved in producing your own music.
Basically, artists often make their music seem louder so it stands out. But in doing this they release their records with a worse sound quality. Most people don't realise this because the music seems louder, and louder seems better.
This is continued by other artists, who then try and seem louder than the previous artists, hence the term "Loudness War"
The Seldom Seen Kid has been produced avoiding this (Loudness Pacifism anyone? perhaps Loudness Conscientious Objectors?), and thus sounds better (certainly to the Mercury panel!)
You might want to find out more by looking on Wikipedia for Dynamic Range Compression, and Loudness War.

| Ok, thanks for trying to explain it to me. I am not producing my own music, so I guess I am out of this discussion! Sorry to interrupt! | |

| Listeners to music are just as important to the discussion as producers. Your opinion is important because there are more of you!
Trying to put this even simpler, if you consider Starlings, it is very quiet, then suddenly very loud when the trumpets start, then it goes back to being quieter.
The difference between the quiet parts and the loud parts is known as dynamics.
Compression means that the difference is not as big, so the quiet parts are almost as loud as the loud parts.

| Ok... I just listened to Starlings carefully. The loud parts seems louder to me than the quiet parts. I don't know if Elbow used compression. Ok, I put it in my words: sometimes I listen to quiet music when I am lying on the couch and try to sleep and with a song like Starlings it's harder for me to fall asleep cause it's very abrupt! I have nothing against the song. I can only explain it that way - how I think of quiet songs getting very loud sometimes. Sorry again. Hope you understand what I want to say. | |
