Sometimes, you know the way the story ends before it begins.
That's how it was for me. I met a woman, we clicked, we talked, I made her a mixtape. And it ended -- track 24! -- with "My Sad Captains."
I wanted an Elbow song, and that's one that's really spoken to me from the most recent album, one that I've really loved. The acoustic version from the Spotify EP felt like it belonged at the end.
I couldn't have been conscious at the time how well the song's chorus would fit the way the story ended a month later. It's not a sad story. It's not a sad song. There are paths that simply diverge, through no fault of anyone, but for the short time when you're on the shared path it's something to cherish.
