| Thanks mate! Angry, definitely. I think they could pull a political album off really well. Politics have always been there in some form on all of their albums, and Garvey has been quite outspoken about the current status quo. I seem to recall his mentioning that the recession and current status quo may form much of the backdrop to the next album around the time of the the release of BARB. Again, it doesn't have to be the Manic Street Preachers - it can still be Elbow. I don't think they could be anyone else - they're too unique. Leaders was political at times, but it was an album about relationships first and foremost - the title track was quite a misleading label in a sense....no pun intended. Not a bad thing, necessarily, because it meant that the agenda wasn't blitzkrieg. Elbow's trademark is their subtlety and I think the second any of us sense they are hitting us over the head with anything, that's when the alarm bells will ring. They won't. Bring on album 6! | |

| Wasn't sure if I should put this here or in the Live section, but... I remember seeing an article online where a song from the new album was promised for the Isle of Wight, but I can't find anything saying that the new song made it to the setlist that day. Guess they changed their minds? | |

| Guy was asked at the Isle of White festival if he would be playing any new material and he said no as it would end up being on youtube and he said people would get to know that version and if they changed it for the album people might not like the newer version. or something like that , sorry I was too busy Ogling him. | |

| I absolutely crave a new album that divides opinion and is nothing like the last 2 albums.
We still need to keep with some of the traits that make Elbow so brilliant - but I want the band to go back to their roots a little (no not 'Soft' !).
Let's hear angular guitar sounds, Jupp battering the skins, distorted vocals and general unruliness ! Or even a couple of tracks like 'I've got your number' ie, as somebody mentioned above - 'brooding' !
I've not listened purposely to Elbow for quite a while now, but watched the Jodrell & T In The Park coverage online/TV, and I was pretty non plussed by it all if I'm totally honest.
They've earned the right to 'do a barb!' ie. where they've got the listeners in a headlock, so to speak, after the success of TSSK. They KNEW they would tune in to hear what the follow up was like.... but I'd LOVE them to shake things up, majorly.

I agree - For the last two months I've been loving the new Richard Hawley album. It's a real change from his last few albums - very fresh and fabulous. However, there are many Hawley fans who absolutely hate it, it's really caused a bit of upset. He's really gone back to basics, lots of guitars - I absolutely love it. So.... I'd love a bit of a shake up. Who am I kidding... I'll love it whatever!! (easily pleased!)

| I'd like some more upbeat stuff. I love The River, Lippy Kids, The Night Will Always Win but would love a bit more along the lines of Grounds, NLR, Forget Myself. Think it would be great for the gigs too! I'm waiting with bated breath! And... I'm with Ticky and will prob love it whatever! | |

| This is from the same article quoted in the arena tour topic, Pete said: - Quote :
- It feels very experimental and we've been going very leftfield with things. Spiritualized get referenced quite a lot and we're trying out new things. We're referencing My Bloody Valentine, Ride… We were working on this new tune the other day and Guy [Garvey] said 'this is like a little Jewish folk song', and we listened back to it and thought 'that's brilliant, we have to keep that vibe'. Its got this great feel of one of those Eastern European stop-animation films. I love it.
Really interesting. I love Spiritualized and well if they had anything sounding like MBV, that'd be incredible. Very intrigued. He also said they have half an album ready, so I'm hoping this referencing makes it up!

I hope that now they've got BARB out the way, the follow up to the TSSK that they *had* to do to keep the new troops happy - things can change. for me, the next one is the key, the lightening rod as to where i see this band heading... they'll never be the little uni gig band of Asleep in the Back days, granted... - My Bury Vest wrote:

when they did the promo for BARB, on the mark radcliffe 6music show... mark was bantering about how him & jupp agreed the next album should be a "big" drums albim... - My Bury Vest wrote:

sounds alot like the Kings of Leon formula that irks so many of their fans, but proves too succesfully to change... you get 2-3 albums that the fans adore, with the real cult tracks that made the band who they are, then one album goes stella with a standout track (sex on fire), then the core fans berate the band for selling out and long for a return to the original sound... jared & nathan are quite cool on twitter and they know what the fans want, but bands have their own creative force and its all about the ride, we as fans are merely passengers and its the artists who decide where we are going... i'm off to catch the 3:10 to Richard Hawley!

| I don't think they should make album number 6 too angsty as such because it is a common place for bands when they start out, and is a corollary of being young and confused and frustrated. I think something bold and perhaps a bit more outspoken is called for though. Not an overtly political album....I don't think this agenda always works....but I think that "edge" is definitely needed, something Build didn't have at all, despite being a great record. I remember reading recently that Guy Garvey simply wrote down the words "THE GREY AREAS" as a key focal point for album 6 and wants to write somgs about things that rarely get written about - this is a good idea; however, I think Elbow have always managaged this. This is precisely why I think they're so special - their songs don't incessantly mourn the breakdown of a relationship; they're not excessively political - indeed, every album has comprised a good selection of themes, not held within a "concept" as such, but simply beautifully weaved together as a cohesive whole. Their spectrum apropos to lyrics has always been very wide, so I can't see "THE GREY AREAS" really changing much. Few bands have written a song about a load of gobby kids or about getting married on a bus (but just in your head). Few bands (if any) have written a song about hearing another song that takes you back to another time and another place, even down to the month of the year it happened..... and has there been a song about the way the old are patronised and almost dehumanised to such an extent as to imply that they do not warrant a memory and longing? That they're just being silly? Garvey's lyrics are always surprising (in their originality and brilliance) . I cannot see them ever releasing a song called "Please Come Back to Me Now" or "Yeah, Baby, Yeah!" at any time in the near or distant future. Musicually, though I love strings and piano and I love the lushness and the softness of much of their music, and although they are not a "guitar band" as such, I would like to hear some more guitar this time around. Yes, it is overused by many bands and has as such become a bit "standard" and uninspiring, but I would like to see Mark Potter given a bit more to do. I think he could be really creative with the guitar....it doesn't need to be a bog standard solo for each song or even a familiar riff.....just the use of guitar more (I recall that the drumming work is to be a bit more pronounced this time around) so I think together we could have a really interesting sound. Not heavy and aggressive- this doesn't suit Elbow - but perhaps a faster pace, a bit livelier, a bit of energy. Bits of Build seemed almost like a Garvey solo album - great stuff, but it was clear that they wanted to remain minimalist.....a good move and an unusual one following commercial success, but they can come back out of their wonderfully modest shells now and give it some welly, I think! The Birds in its brilliance and complexity is a good platform actually.....more of this ilk and perhaps less of The River and The Night Will Always Win.....great songs but ones that actually do only need to be done once.... a structure such as The Birds has so much scope and life.....and I really like the idea of a song that twists and turns, with middle-8 sections, no strict verse, chorus verse.....just really original and taking the listener by surprise. I can't wait. | |

| The Bury veterans on their new album, inspired by prog-rock and immigrants!Guy Garvey: " It's very different from 'Build A Rocket Boys!'. In some parts it’s choppier and tighter and harder than previous records. In other places it’s a lot more experimental then we’ve been for the last couple of albums. One ‘experiment’ involved us being up all night at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studio and doing a lot of dancing. We watched a prog rock documentary, then sampled some of it and made a new groove. I’d say this is our proggiest record. I’ve been listening to everything from Death Grips to Fela Kuti. Then of course there are the staples: a bit of Yes here, some Genesis there. We’ve all been loving Little Dragon, Duke Ellington, Here We Go Magic. Lots in the pot, a real gumbo.
Thematically, it’s about transition. It’s about life change of one kind or another, negative and positive. There’s one song about an old guy in a young person’s bar, telling them that he designed their drugs and their music and that they should have some respect for him. It’s quite an angry thing called ‘Charge’. Then there’s ‘The Blanket Of Night’, which is a portrait of a refugee couple in a small boat on a rough sea at night. That was to illustrate that, while both political parties are blaming the country’s problems on immigrants, there are people who are dying to get into the country. It’s so irresponsible to blame immigrants for our problems, those politicians should fucking be ashamed of themselves. Another one’s called ‘My Sad Captains’. There’s a line in it – “We only come this way but once” – which is actually a bastardisation of William Penn [founder of Pennsylvania]. He was talking about realising you only have one life, realising your own mortality.” UNCUT, February 2014 Here's a picture of the page! http://postimg.org/image/jezkrxzw1/The first single will be "Fly Boy Blue / Lunette"! http://www.amazon.fr/Fly-Boy-Blue-Lunette/dp/B00HAF41M6
