Wie heißt eine der erfolgreichsten Bands in Großbritannien? Elbow. Aber es hat eine Weile gedauert, bis sie etabliert war. Die Bandmitglieder spielten zum ersten Mal 1990 zusammen. Allerdings erschien erst 2001 das Debütalbum "Asleep in the Back".

Das lag an ihrem Plattenvertrag - er wurde wieder gekündigt, bevor die ersten Aufnahmen überhaupt veröffentlicht waren. Spätestens 2008 wurde dann deutlich, dass Elbow es endgültig geschafft hat. Das vierte Album "The Seldom Seen Kid" gewann den prestigeträchtigen Mercury, der in England alle zwölf Monate für das kulturell hochwertigste Album des Jahres verliehen wird.

2009 bekam Elbow auch noch den Brit Award für die beste Band des Jahres verliehen. Die Mitglieder von Elbow haben die Plattensammlungen ihrer älteren Geschwister geliebt, sind von Genesis und David Bowie inspiriert worden. Sänger Guy Garvey meint, er habe das Songschreiben letztendlich durch Peter Gabriel gelernt.

Etwas selbstironisch sagt er: "Wir sind wie Prog Rock ohne die langen Solo-Eskapaden".
Die Bandmitglieder leben inzwischen alle wieder in der Kleinstadt Bury bei Manchester, wo sie aufgewachsen sind.

Das aktuelle fünfte Album "Build a Rocket Boys!" widmet sich thematisch ihrer Kindheit in dieser Gegend.

The band members are meanwhile living in the small town Bury near Manchester, where they grew up.
The latest fifth album "BARB" dedicates thematically to their youth around this area.
