Listening more and more to The Birds, it's got a very Whispergrass-like feel to it. And it was SO good Live!!

Can't wait for the full version... bounce bounce

I'm trying to avoid sharing my opinion on the album until more people have heard it, but The Birds is a clear favourite at the moment.

The Birds is just immense. It could almost be the best opener yet.

From the others, I think my favourite is Ribcage, then Station Approach, then Any Day Now. Starlings is a beautiful song but the horn blasts ruin the song for me. I get what they signify, conceptually, but even so.

The Birds after the middle-8 section actually IS ecstasy. Only it was a brand that cost a piddly £11.93. Good, eh? Very Happy

This track is just amazing.
I just keep listening to it and when I'm out and about I keep humming it!
People think I'm crazy but I'm just going around in a harmless happy daze...
Can't wait to hear it live again!

Heartbreakingly wonderful, lyrically and musically. This and High Ideals are my stand-out tracks so far, on early listens.

I hope for both live...

Garvey's voice in the last section (when the strings come in) absolutely floors me. Reminiscent of Gary Brooker of Procul Harum, but with greater depth/mournfulness. Gets the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Might just wet myself when they play it live Embarassed

Just fantastic, another one of those elbow songs that gives me goosebumps, the last 3 minutes are just glorious and its another fine opener from them, will give it a few more listens before I rank it against the others though.

A la Cambridge, where it was played first - seems a perfect opening tune for the live shows.

Yep, me too! On rare occasions I go OCD on a particular song. Must pull back a bit as I don't want to over-indulge.

Thank God, I thought it was just me! Laughing

Know what you mean errant, it has echoes of some of my favourite elbow songs, combined together in one place. Brilliant.

After the first listen, easily the best, most remembered track on the album for sure! terrrfic opener!
EIGHT minutes of pure greatness. Is it their longest song aswell? I think it might be.

And then its followed by the 6 min Lippy kids. Just awesome.

Yep, it has the grandeur of a Shine On You Crazy Diamond or a Kashmir. I think this group are getting better and better. The recent live tracks I've seen/heard released on various media outlets (official, Youtube, BBC etc.) bears this out.

You know, I get funny looks when I say they are easily in the top three all-time best live groups I've ever seen - and I've been going to gigs for over 30 years. Still, when they can sell out the O2 in London I guess the cat is out of the bag Wink

Does anyone else think this track is very Peter Gabrielesque? It goes very 'games without frontiers/digging in the dirt' in the middle - while being recognisably Elbow, of course! The first time I heard it, I was in and out of the room where it was playing, and from a distance it just sounded very PG to me!

Whatever, I'm another one who thinks this might be the best on the album.

I thought exactly the same thing with regard to that middle section, to the point where I'm not entirely convinced PG isn't there, lurking somewhere low in the mix!

I've thought the differnece between gabe & guy has been minimal at the best of times, and yes i concur that this track is the most obvious thing they've put down on record to confirm this... which to me is a good thing! Could easily see the lads doing the best cover ever of something like the Carpet Crawlers...

My best mate Pete mentioned the self-same thing this morning ... and I actually see your point(s). The keyboard bit in the middle section is also (and rather oddly) reminiscent of an instrumental by the hard rock band, UFO called 'Alpha Centauri'. As Craig is nowhere near as old as me, and has probably never heard said track I put this purely down to coincidence Smile

I am loving this track and the middle section is just gorgeous send shivers down my spine! My sister called me whilst listening to it and said how she'd had an Elbow moment listening to this track.

I actually thought that too, some of those backing vocals sound...familiar? Guy spent some time at Real World, didn't he?
